Tremendous trade at Whinchat

sale with 42 over 3,000 guineas A beautiful sunny day in Leicestershire may have deterred some but with the substantial input from Marteye, accounting for nearly half the animals bought, the sale had 83 buyers from all parts of the UK.

82 will go to Ireland, North & South with decker loads to Wales and Scotland.
The on-farm event which was a reduction sale contained many of the breed’s best known cow families and top ranked sires with a depth of pedigree in many cases seldom seen in a sale catalogue.
It was a member of the Birkle family’s most coveted line – the Savoire Fares that claimed top price of 9,000 guineas for a two month old calf by Stantons Chief and bred from a unique 11 generations of Excellent dams that average 94 points. She was purchased by Messrs Wills Brothers for their Willsbro herd, Anthony Wills bidding from his Cornish fiefdom via Marteye.

The same thing happened with her close relative, also going to Willsbro at 5700 guineas. The 82 cows and milking heifers met a flying trade averaging just shy of £3,000 with a top bid of 6,000 guineas for the superb Whinchat Doorman Shula 2 VG89, a fresh second calf cow giving 56kg bred from 6 generations of Excellent cows tracing back to the mother of the great Picston Shottle.

She joins a 5,000 guinea VG86 Farrah heifer travelling to Coleraine to Millar Farms. Served heifers were also in strong demand, despite many being only recently served, with several making 3,000gns or more. Whinchat Atwood Amanda 2 lead the section at 3,500gns, selling to Winton herd of Messrs Waring who purchased 8 head on the day.

Maiden heifers and yearlings saw the best selling to an impressive 6,800 guineas for the beautifully bred Whinchat Goldwyn Farrah 5 ET, bred from 7 straight Excellent cows with a 97 point 100 tonne dam. She crosses the border into Scotland to join the Northhill herd near Mauchline.

Top priced bull was 2,000 guineas. This was a fine group of cattle of which Andrew Birkle and family should be proud of and will surely prove valuable acquisitions for the many buyers. Our sincere thanks to all.
